Solving a Problem at Workplace

Problem solving is effectively dealing with issues that arise during the course of a project. Problems or issues can be small or significant. Having an ability to quickly detect problems and determine their root cause and impact is an important project management leadership skill. Once a problem is identified, either by the project manager or the project team or stakeholder, it needs to be analyzed. Sometimes problems masquerade themselves as symptoms, which means it will take some time and analysis to actually find the root cause. Sometimes problems masquerade as political influence and sometimes problems evolve from simple miscommunication and turn out to not really be problems. In any case, if they impact the success of the project or achievement of the project goals, then the project manager must take heed and document the problem.

At that point, the problem should be analysed to ensure that the root cause is identified. Trying to solve a problem, without understanding the root cause first, will lead to a resurrection of the problem in the future. Finding the root cause might involve having discussions with those impacted, asking questions about why the problem occurred, or using metrics to guide you to the source.

Once the root cause is identified, the project manager can seek input as to how to resolve the problem. Ideas should be generated and evaluated for their ability to resolve the root cause, as well as their cost, time, and resource requirements.
