5 Basic Excel Skills Every Beginner Should Learn

  1. Learn the Shortcuts

A major shortcut you’ll want to use is Ctrl+c to copy a cell and then using Ctrl+v to paste. This is a great shortcut if you’re having to do repetitive tasks on Excel. 

If you need to find something, try Ctrl+f. Are you wanting to copy the entire sheet? Use Ctrl+a. 

  1. Quickly Sort Data

When working with large chunks of data, it’s easiest to sort the data in order to quickly find what you’re looking for later on. For example, many people sort things alphabetically. 

To sort data, highlight all of the data you’d wish to sort. Click on the tab labeled “Data”, and then go ahead and click the “Sort” button. All you have to do now is chose how to sort it.

When your boss asks you to print out your spreadsheets, you need to be prepared. One of the best Excel tips for beginners is taking the time to mess around with page layout options. 

Click on the Page Layout tab. Print out a few different copies, and alter the page numbering and columns in each one. You’ll be able to see which looks best.
